Need for Autonomous courses For jobs

Today is the time of the modern generation with modern education. These simple and advanced courses which enhance and represent the interest and passion of the student are called as Autonomous courses. All good institutions like IITs and NITs are autonomous. Highlighting the importance of autonomous colleges, the UGC document on the XI Plan Profile of higher education in India clearly states that: “The only safe and better way to improve the quality of undergraduate education is in the link most of the colleges from the affiliating structure. Colleges with academic and operative freedom are doing better and have more credibility. The financial support to such colleges boosts the concept of Autonomy.” It is proposed to increase the number of autonomous colleges to spread the culture of autonomy and the target is to make 10 per cent of eligible colleges Autonomous by the end of the XI Plan period.

Need for Autonomous courses

The affiliating system of colleges was originally designed when their number in a university was small. The university could then effectively oversee the working of the colleges, act as an examining body and awarddegrees on their behalf. The system has now become unwieldy and it is becoming increasingly difficult for a university to attend to the varied needs of individual colleges. The colleges do not have the freedom to modernize their curricula or make them locally relevant. The regulations of the university and its common system, governing all colleges alike, Irrespective of their characteristic strengths, weaknesses and locations, have affected the academic development of individual colleges. Colleges that have the potential for offering programmes of a higher standard do not have the freedom to offer them. In 1964-66 the Education Commission pointed out that the exercise of academic freedom by teachers is a crucial requirement for development of the intellectual climate of our country. Unless such a climate prevails, it is difficult to achieve excellence in our higher education system. With students, teachers and management being co-partners in raising the quality of higher education, it is Imperative that they share a major responsibility. Hence, the Education Commission (1964-66) recommended college autonomy, which, in essence, is the instrument for promoting academic excellence.

They are mostly related with the management courses. They are similar to the management, medical science internships of minimum 6-12 months. These autonomous courses are for those students who cannot afford the cost of the degree or they don’t want to spoil their precious years in degree.
For example

Diploma in Management the duration of this course is only a year.
There are some graduate diplomas too the course duration is 3 years as same as a bachelor degree.  This diploma is named as or called as Graduate Diploma in Business Management.
There are some Post Graduation diplomas are also available in the universities of India.
These diplomas are Post Graduation Diploma in Management the duration of the course is  1 another year as well as we have Masters Program In Management the duration of the course is 2 years as same as master degree of commerce.

Benefits of these courses-

These courses have more benefits then the long degrees first of all they save the time of those students who have gap years in study and they don’t want to spend a long time in degrees and then they help those students too who are not that much financially strong that they can do a degree. So they can help themselves to grow more in the field of management.
The second benefit of these courses are that those people who are doing part time jobs as well or those who are doing part time study they can do these courses as they are diplomas so they are much easier then the degrees so they will not find any kind of problem for maintaining a balance between the study and the work and the benefit is that some institutions are providing these courses in distance education programs.
The third benefit is that as they are quite similar to the degrees or the particular field so the student who becomes employee after these courses can easily grow up in his career. Because in management field usually higher authorities sees the ability of the worker or employee while giving him promotions or other benefits like bonuses etc. so the students of the autonomous institutions can grow as well. The students from these autonomous courses are well prepared for the business sector. They can easily crack the interviews because the students have been taught by the faculty about the group discussions which helps the students for sharpen their brains in the decisions making abilities.

Difference between an Autonomous Institution and Non Autonomous Institution

Autonomous Institutions – It is affiliated to a government university but does not follow it’s syllabus or curriculum. There are some salient features of these type of institutions.
1.Academic independence which gives it the freedom to revise the syllabus with time and follow a schedule which is more suitable for the set curriculum.
2.Exams are conducted by the institute itself and are in accordance with what is being taught during the session.
3.Relative grading system where the highest marks obtained by a student decides the marks the others get so in case of a difficult paper, a low percentage score would not necessarily mean a low GPA.
4.Degrees finally awarded by the university which generally a lot of reputation.
Non Autonomous Institutions- Affiliated to the government university and follows it’s syllabus and curriculum. There are some salient features of these type of institutions too.
1.Curriculum is common with many other affiliated institutions and is regulated by a university throughout a certain region. (sometimes even an entire state)
2.Easy availability and ample options for books.
3.Exams are conducted by the affiliated university.

But there are some downsides of the Non Autonomous Institutions
1.Syllabus or Curriculum issued by the University has to be blindly followed.
2.No relative grading system, so a difficult exam means low marks for everyone.
3.Schedules are always known to go haywire with results of previous semesters. Sometimes being announced only a few days before the next exams.

Universities offering autonomous courses abroad

University of Barcelona, Spain – This is an autonomous university providing different types of courses related with the management, medical science and tourisms. This autonomous university was established in June, 6, 1968. As it is an old university so we can make a guess that this is not an unsuccessful university.
National Autonomous University of Mexico- This University was founded in year 1910. But UNAMs autonomy granted in 1929.
Singapore University of Technology and design- Provides the under graduate autonomous courses.
Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce- Symbiosis is the multinational multicultural and multilingual institution of India. This well repudiated institution of India was established by Dr. S.B. Mujumdar in the year 1971. It is providing autonomous courses to the Humanities (Arts) and for Commerce field students. This college is collaborated internationally with the Universities of USA and Europe.

These are some most popular institutions of the world. But almost all of the big universities around the globe are providing the autonomous courses. This means that not only in India but around the globe we have a lot of options in different fields for the autonomous courses.

Scope of autonomous courses- As we all know that every student chooses his field with the hope of a great scope in future. We can define scope as the chances of being successful and also chances of getting jobs in future. So, yes there is a good scope of autonomous courses that is because student studies in a particular field and also student knows how to work in the field he studied before in his education. There are only those syllabuses which can be covered easily and in favour of the students. As there are Resource acquisition, Efficiency Index, Average work load, average time distribution between lectures and practical. There are Group discussions as well as teaching aids used which means programmes and activities planned and implemented. This makes the student a brighter and smarter than the non-autonomous institutions. This is what the basic need of the market of the globe or we can say that business sector needs this that’s why we can say that there is a good scope of the autonomous courses.
